The atmosphere was electric in "The Nest" for the season opener as the Maumelle Hornets took on the Conway Wampus Cats. Though the night ended with Conway narrowly clinching an 86-77 win, the standout performance of senior Markalon Rochell captivated fans and set a promising tone for Maumelle's season.

The game began with both teams struggling to find their rhythm amidst a slew of fouls and turnovers. No fewer than 10 traveling violations and a staggering 18 fouls marked a chaotic first half. Conway managed to pull ahead 21-15 by the end of the first quarter, but Maumelle fought back with a competitive second quarter, keeping the Wampus Cats’ lead slim at halftime with a score of 39-33.

The Hornets were led by Rochell, who scored 22 points in the first half alone. He hit three from beyond the arc, went nearly perfect from the free-throw line, and dominated inside, all while adding four rebounds and an assist. Sophomore Kamryn Alexander also left his mark, thrilling the crowd with two emphatic blocks and showcasing his defensive skills. Alexander’s energy and Rochell's scoring were key in keeping the Hornets within striking distance.

Conway leaned heavily on its own dynamic duo—Kanard Turner and Jamal Holden. Both players attacked the paint, forcing the Hornets' defense to work hard. By halftime, Turner and Holden had each scored 11 points, with four rebounds apiece. Conway’s ability to capitalize on turnovers and break through Maumelle’s defense kept them in control.

As the third quarter began, it was Maumelle’s Cedric Jones who stole the show. The senior guard exploded, scoring 15 of his 18 points in that quarter alone. His confident drives to the basket and sharp shooting fired up the Hornets’ offense, bringing Maumelle within reach. Jones finished the night with four rebounds and two steals, proving he’s a force to be reckoned with this season.

Meanwhile, Conway's Turner and Holden continued to dominate. Turner, showcasing his aggressive play, ended with a team-high 26 points, four rebounds, and a block, while Holden wrapped up with 21 points and nine rebounds. Jace Sullivan also provided crucial support, racking up five points, seven rebounds, and two steals.

By the fourth quarter, the intensity was at an all-time high. Both teams pushed each other with ferocious defense and relentless drives to the basket. Maumelle battled hard, but Conway’s lead proved insurmountable. With a final score of 86-77, the Wampus Cats walked away with the victory.

Yet, the player of the night was undoubtedly Markalon Rochell. The senior forward finished with a stellar 37 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, and a block. In his last first home game, Rochell delivered a performance to be remembered. It has been an absolute privilege witnessing his journey. Reflecting on his varsity career, he’s been a consistent contributor for the Hornets, and tonight, he left it all on the court. Maumelle’s senior leaders—Rochell, Jones, and Jayce Tillman (who added 12 points and six rebounds)—showed they’re ready to lead this team to new heights.

Looking ahead, Maumelle’s season holds immense potential. With talented players like Reese Shearon, Kam Alexander, Kennon Johnson, and Derrick Lewis, along with a deep bench and the upcoming return of football players, the Hornets are set for a thrilling season. Coach and fans alike have high hopes that this blend of experience and emerging talent will keep Maumelle competitive in every game.

The Hornets next face the Bryant Hornets at the Da Matchup Showcase this Friday, while Conway will challenge the Parkview Patriots at Parkview. Both games are set to bring the heat, and if tonight’s matchup is any indication, basketball fans across Arkansas are in for an exciting season.
