Game Recap: Maumelle Hornets vs. Bryant Hornets

Final Score: Bryant 70 – Maumelle 56

When you walk into a Maumelle vs. Bryant matchup, you already know what you’re signing up for, pace, grit, and two programs that never back down from a challenge. Friday night lived fully up to that expectation. The Maumelle student section was loud, the energy was high, and both groups brought every bit of toughness they had.

The storyline coming in was simple:

Maumelle — smaller, younger, overlooked by most, but gritty and fearless.

Bryant — deep, disciplined, and one of the most complete rosters in the state.

And from the jump, that depth mattered.

First Half Breakdown

Halftime Score: Bryant 42 – Maumelle 29

Bryant won the tip, and UCA signee Camarion “CB” Bead opened the scoring with a bucket that set the tone early. Maumelle answered at 5:40 on a strong finish by Kam Alexander, followed by a steal seconds later, showing they came to punch back.

Both teams traded blows through the first quarter. Jackson Walker set the gym off with a dunk assisted by Ashton “A2” Shelton, tying things up before Mason Abrahamson and Reese Shearon exchanged threes. It was fast, physical, and fun basketball.

The first ended with Abrahamson drilling a three to give Bryant an 18–13 edge.

In the second quarter the fouls started stacking early for Maumelle, and Bryant’s depth began to slip into the picture. Tennessee Tech signee RJ Young knocked down a three, TJ Cochran attacked the paint, and KD Hicks found his rhythm with two free throws followed by an assist to Alteso Walker for a big-time corner three.

Maumelle fought to hang around, Kam Alexander hit a clutch three and Jackson Walker kept crashing the glass, but Bryant’s late-half push and a Teso Walker three at the buzzer widened the gap heading into halftime.

First Half Leading Scorers

  • Maumelle: Jackson Walker – 10 pts

  • Bryant: Camarion “CB” Bead – 13 pts

Second Half Breakdown

The third quarter stayed even, both teams scoring 12, and Maumelle refused to let the game blow open. Abrahamson scored first, and Maumelle responded with A2 Shelton fighting tough under the rim to create a bucket for Shearon. With just over a minute left in the third, Kennon Johnson hit a massive three that brought the home side to life.

But Bryant always had an answer. Hicks stacked up trips to the line, and by the fourth quarter Bryant had firmly re-established control. Maumelle continued to battle, diving for loose balls, taking contact, and pushing pace, but the combination of Bryant’s length, depth, and composure closed the night out.

What stood out most was this:

Maumelle played a better game against Bryant than Mills or Parkview did earlier in last weekends showcase.

They may be small, but they’re tough. And their energy never dipped.

With trips to Har-Ber and Bentonville coming up on their NWA swing, this battle-tested performance should serve them well.

Maumelle showed real toughness tonight against a powerhouse Bryant squad, and while I’m off the court for a few days, I may be making my way up to Bentonville next Tuesday night for the Maumelle vs. Bentonville matchup. Stay tuned.
